Young Firefighters
The young firefighter uniformed cadet scheme is a two year programme run for young people, both male and female, aged 13 – 18 years. Young firefighters have their own fire engine and specially adapted equipment, which they use in specific activities which mirror fire fighting drills. They will learn the skills used by fire fighters and will be trained to use fire fighting equipment such as hoses, ladders and breathing apparatus.
The main focus of the scheme is to develop citizenship in young people. South Wales Fire and Rescue Service have a statutory duty to educate and prevent fire. Each of the young fire fighters will work towards a BTEC Level 2 Award in Fire and Rescue Service in the Community, and parts of this will focus on fire safety in the home, arson, anti-social behaviour and road traffic collisions. Young firefighters also design their own community projects and get involved in fundraising events.
Young firefighters are supplied with a uniform and fire kit. Drill nights take place during the school term – 6.30 – 9.00pm and a youth training programme is followed. Young firefighters will learn how to work as part of a team and gain confidence and self discipline.
